Ucupaint is a relatively modern Blender add-on designed to improve how artists paint and manage textures directly inside Blender. In simple terms, it tries to bring a layer-based painting workflow, similar to programs like Photoshop or Substance Painter, into Blender’s native environment. The add-on focuses on making texture painting more structured and flexible, especially for artists working with complex materials or game-ready assets.

Compatibility
You need at least Blender 2.79 to use this addon, but more advanced features are only available on the modern version of Blender (2.80+). Current version supports even Blender 5.0

At its core, Ucupaint introduces a layer stack system for textures. Instead of working with a single image texture and painting directly on it, users can stack multiple layers, masks, decals, and procedural textures on top of each other. These layers can include images, vertex colors, generated textures, and more, allowing artists to combine different sources into one material. Each layer can also be modified with operations such as color ramps or math adjustments, which makes it easier to fine-tune the final result without repainting everything.

Another important feature is that Ucupaint integrates tightly with Blender’s shader node system. All its layers are organized inside a node group that can connect to other nodes in the material graph. This means the add-on does not completely replace Blender’s workflow but extends it. Artists can still use standard nodes while managing their painting layers through Ucupaint’s interface. The add-on also supports features like UDIM detection, decal layers, baking channels, and even real-time effects such as ambient occlusion layers that update automatically when the mesh changes.

When compared with Blender’s built-in texture painting system, the main difference is workflow structure. Blender’s default painting tools are powerful but relatively basic in terms of layer management. Typically, you paint directly onto a single image texture or manually build complex node setups if you want layered effects. While this works, it can become messy for larger projects because every effect must be managed manually with nodes or separate images.

Ucupaint addresses this by giving artists a centralized layer interface. Instead of building complicated node networks, the artist can simply add a layer, mask it, adjust its blending, and move it around in a stack. This makes iteration faster, especially when experimenting with materials like dirt, scratches, decals, or edge wear. In many ways, it tries to replicate the workflow found in dedicated texturing tools such as Substance Painter, but without leaving Blender. Some developers even describe it as a free alternative to Substance Painter-style workflows inside Blender.

However, Blender’s native painting system still has advantages. Because it is built directly into the core software, it is usually more stable and simpler for beginners. It also avoids the extra abstraction layer introduced by add-ons. Ucupaint’s node groups and layered structure can sometimes make materials more complex behind the scenes, which may confuse users who want a very transparent node setup. Additionally, some workflows—such as baking multiple objects into a single texture set—can still require additional tools or manual steps.

Compared to other Blender texturing add-ons, Ucupaint sits somewhere in the middle. Some add-ons focus mainly on baking or procedural materials, while others focus on painting tools. Ucupaint combines painting, layering, masking, and baking into one workflow. This makes it attractive for artists working on game assets or stylized models where layered materials are common.

Overall, Ucupaint does not replace Blender’s painting tools but builds a more organized workflow on top of them. For artists who prefer layered editing and non-destructive texturing, it can significantly speed up the process. At the same time, those who prefer a simpler approach may still find Blender’s native system sufficient for many tasks.

CHANGELOG UCUPAINT 2.4.6 BELOW:
What’s New
Paste Blank Layer(s). This will paste the layers with all the settings and modifiers copied, but the pasted images will be blank.
Button to remove Mio3 UV checker if there’s any, since it can override the current material.
Bugfixes
Fix: Blender can freeze while baking AO/Pointiness/etc when multiple materials are used, and there are too many polygons involved. It can still occur with Blender 2.83 or lower, but is fixed in Blender 2.90+.
Fix: Baking AO doesn’t take into account the alpha channel.
Fix: Baking can cause a crash in Blender 5.1 if there are multiple objects and one of them has a string attribute
Fix: Toggle Eraser doesn’t use the correct eraser for Pixel Art Brush
Fix: Errors can happen when updating a very old file.
Fix: Warnings will appear in Blender 5.1 console because of invalid regex codes.
Fix: Fake Lighting and Edge Detect layers have the wrong gamma if linear blending is disabled.
Fix: Baking will not function properly if objects are not visible in the viewport.
Fix: Contributors/sponsors UI can crash Blender.
Fix: Editing bake channel dialog box after baking will cause a crash.
Fix: Cannot sculpt VDM image in Blender 5.2.
